CF Rehabilitation Gardens

Creating spaces that support the recovery of body, mind and dignity

Rehabilitation gardens for military hospitals and mental health centers, children’s hospitals, memorial gardens of remembrance in the communities of Ukraine

about us

We transform hospital grounds into therapeutic environments: accessible, sensory-focused, and safe — where nature becomes part of rehabilitation and therapy

This is not “landscaping.” It is therapeutic infrastructure designed according to the principles of evidence-based design. Research into healthcare environments shows that contact with nature (visual access to greenery, natural light, access to a garden) is linked to better recovery outcomes — specifically, a reduced need for strong analgesics, fewer negative nursing notes, and shorter hospital stays for patients with views of nature.

mission of our organization

The word garden translates from Persian as — Paradise. We create gardens for people who have survived the hell of war, illness, loss of family and loved ones, their homes, and their way of life.

Our Goal

To build a network of inclusive green zones within Ukraine’s medical facilities and provide patients with access to high-quality outdoor rehabilitation — in alignment with the global trend of strengthening rehabilitation as a component of the healthcare system.

The problem we address

We restore physical and mental health by creating therapeutic and rehabilitation gardens in children’s hospitals, military hospitals, and communities across Ukraine.

Changes driven by donors

Expanding the capacity to implement design solutions for accessibility and rehabilitation, creating new locations for the delivery of a comprehensive physical and mental health treatment cycle.

We create an environment where:

psychophysiological stress is reduced, and a sense of control and safety emerges

there is a place for first steps, gait training, and endurance exercises in the open air

«silent» rehabilitation occurs — through the restoration of attention, sleep, and emotional stability

The scientific basis supports the idea that natural environments contribute to faster stress recovery (through positive emotions and physiological responses)

therapeutic space

Who the gardens help

Military personnel in hospitals

For individuals with combat injuries and PTSD, environments that reduce sensory overload and support the nervous system are critically important. Research highlights the potential of nature-based approaches (including therapeutic gardens and therapeutic horticulture) in working with veterans and trauma symptoms. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

Military personnel in hospitals

Children in specialized clinics

Review studies and children's hospital practices describe how garden access can reduce anxiety and pain, provide a psychological "respite," and support behavioral and physical markers of recovery.

Medical staff

Doctors and nurses need a place for brief restoration. Publications and recommendations regarding therapeutic hospital gardens emphasize their role in reducing stress and supporting staff well-being, which is directly linked to the quality of care.

Families of fallen Heroes

Rehabilitation gardens also become a space of support for the families of fallen military personnel. The memorial garden we created is not just a place of remembrance, but a therapeutic environment for quietly processing loss, dignified commemoration, and internal dialogue. The space is designed considering principles of psychological safety: intimacy, natural materials, tactile textures, and living plants symbolizing the continuity of life. Such a garden allows families to be close to memory without the pressure of publicity, in an environment that supports the stabilization of their emotional state. The memorial landscape becomes a place not only of grief but of gradual recovery through nature, silence, and community.

gardentherapy

Winter programs for support and natural rehabilitation

In the first year of the full-scale war, we launched winter nature-therapy initiatives, which we have been systematically implementing for the fourth consecutive year as part of our rehabilitation activities.

Excursions to the Botanical Garden

With the support of colleagues and benefactors, we provide transportation, catering, and organized visits to the botanical garden during the azalea blooming period — a time when the space is filled with color, light, and the sense of life continuing despite the war.
